The Initiative

The Introduction

The Times Group launched Teach India as a CSR initiative to teach spoken English to the youth belonging to underprivileged sections of the urban society. British Council has been brought on board as knowledge partner for designing the curriculum, and for training the volunteers who will thereafter train the learners. The course curriculum has been designed keeping in mind the present language levels of the target segment and the spoken English requirements of potential employers. The Times Group also pro-actively attempts to build a bridge between the learners and the potential employers and connect the two to facilitate the ultimate goal of employability. On completion of the course, the learners get a certificate, which is certified by The Times Group.

The Learner

With a learner-centredapproach, the Teach India Programme aims at enabling the underprivileged youth of the nation. It envisions impacting the lives of a stratum of society that has been long left behind in terms of opportunities and progress.

The learners undergo the training on spoken English over the100-dayperiod, with the aim of making them ‘job-ready’, in terms of spoken English requirements. However, the Programme does not end with training of the learners on spoken English. The initiative, through its Job Fair, facilitatessuitable employment opportunities for the learners at the end of each cycle.

The Volunteer

Teach India is driven by highly motivated individuals, its volunteer-teachers, who come forward to serve the society with a purely altruistic motive. As a Teach India Volunteer, you pledge to teach for 2 hours a day, 3 alternate days a week, for 100 days. Along with this, you also commit to 7 days of compulsory training prior to the start of the Programme; and 1 day of training, in the middle of the cycle, conducted by The Times Group.

A typical volunteer applicant goes through 2-3 rounds of brief telephonic interviews. Volunteers are allocated teaching batches subject to their successful completion of the training, based on the preferences filled-in by him/her at the time of registering. Upon completion of the 100-days Programme, a volunteer is awarded two certificates – one for successful completion of training and the second for successful delivery of the course curriculum –by the Times Group.Since the initiative requires the volunteer to make substantial time commitment, it is believed that only the resolute volunteers will step up to the challenge and be a part of Teach India.

NGO

NGO

The Teach India initiative has managed to reach out to its target beneficiaries with the help of its 150+ NGO partners in Delhi/NCR and Mumbai. The partner NGOs, working mostly in underdeveloped urban sections, are responsible for the ground-level implementation of the Programme. Each of the partner NGOs have been selected carefully based on stringent criteria; and The Times Group supports them not just financially, but on multiple fronts, including training.

The partner NGOs are responsible for reaching out to the underprivileged community and managing the classroom logistics and other day-to-day affairs at the teaching Centre with respect to the initiative.

The Curriculum

The curriculum has been designed by British Council focusing on functional spoken English requirement for entry-level jobs. The sessions have been designed into 2 hour daily capsules, 6 days a week. The curriculum has a learner-focused approach, with the teacher acting as a facilitator rather than a dispenser of knowledge. Collaborative learning methodologies have been extensively used. After a set of modules on strengthening core spoken English, the learners are trained on the use of language in occupational scenarios, to make them job-ready. Even the assignments in the curriculum are based on examples from relevant industries like retail, financial services and hospitality, thus ensuring the industry relevance. Considering the specific targeted approach of the course material and the previously proven effectiveness of teaching methods sculpted by British Council, we believe that a training session is essential for the volunteer-teachers. Hence a mandatory commitment of 8 days for training is expected from volunteer-teachers, 7 prior to the start of the cycle and a day during the course of teaching.

There is an additional module ‘Face the World’ taught at the end of 10 weeks focusing on soft skills and interview skills which equip our learners in facing professional environments.

‘Steps to Success’, is a prelude to the training process, aimed at guiding and motivating the learners as they kick-start their Teach India journey.
